The Robberg Nature Reserve is a spectacular nature and marine reserve extending over a dramatic peninsula just south of Plettenberg Bay on the famed Garden Route. This is a must‑visit destination for anyone planning a road trip, adventure on the Garden Route, or seeking a bucket list experience combining hiking, beaches, wildlife, and jaw‑dropping ocean views.
Whether you’re travelling with family, enjoying a romantic getaway, celebrating a honeymoon, or exploring in a group, Robberg offers diverse adrenaline, fun, and nature‑filled activities that suit a range of interests and fitness levels. Its rugged coastline, striking cliffs, pristine beaches and ocean wildlife make it an unforgettable part of any Garden Route adventure.
Hiking & Trails: Explore three scenic circular trails that range from short and easy to challenging and invigorating. The Gap Circuit (~2.1 km) is perfect for a quick nature walk, the Witsand Circuit (~5.5 km) offers moderate thrills and panoramic views, and the Point Circuit (~9.2 km) hugs cliffs and rewards hikers with expansive ocean vistas. These trails weave past seal colonies, ancient rock formations and hidden coves.
Wildlife & Nature: Spot Cape fur seals basking on the offshore rocks, dolphins frolicking in the waves, and, in season, breathtaking whale sightings from vantage points along the peninsula. Birders will delight in diverse coastal birdlife amid the fynbos habitat.
History & Culture: Discover the Nelson Bay Cave, a Stone Age archaeological site showcasing ancient human history along the coastline.
Water & Beach Activities: Soothe tired legs on the secluded beaches or (for strong, experienced swimmers) take a dip with ocean views, though strong currents mean caution is essential.
Abseiling: For adventure seekers, the reserve also offers guided abseiling down its cliffs a thrilling way to add an extreme twist to your visit. Bookings and safety gear are included with trained guides.
